Hello Reader,
As the end of the year comes near, we tend to look back at the year gone by. As we prepare to launch ourselves into planning for the next year, these precious moments of reflection help us reconcile our expectations with the reality of what this year turned out to be. These moments help us analyze and understand what worked for us and what didn't; what could we have done differently and what we wouldn't change for the world.
They say hindsight is 20/20. But if that were true we would all be able to balance the check book of 2021 perfectly. That's rarely the case though. It's difficult to be objective about any life experience when you are caught in the middle of it. And this does feel like we are still in the middle of it. This year has brought a lot of uncertainty and change into our lives. And it doesn't feel like we are done with all the changes yet.
As I mentioned in the previous volume of EQrated, what a year 2021 was! Whether you are looking back with regret, or in triumph, this is an important ritual that helps us move forward. So while it may sound contradictory, do take the time to look back, before moving forward in the coming year. The connection that we have with our past, informs the actions of our future.
In this last newsletter of the year, I would like to highlight some resources on CONNECTION, human or otherwise, that makes us who we are and shapes our everyday lives. Each of these speakers talks about how we are all connected - to each other and to our larger community. They help us navigate the change in our lives and remind us to collaborate as we strive to find the solutions to difficult problems.

And she found that what impeded connection was shame - the feeling that some quality prevents us from being worthy of love. Transcending that shame involves vulnerability. In her latest book Atlas of the Heart: Mapping Meaningful Connection & the Language of Human Experience she explores these familiar themes along with 87 emotions & experiences that define what it means to be human. Hello Reader, As December rolls around, we see many news articles and posts about the "Year in Review". Depending on your reading habits and media consumption, I'm guessing you have seen at least one such article. Spotify has even made a whole marketing campaign out of it. Since 2016, #SpotifyWrapped dissects our listening choices for the entire year. What started as a rudimentary list of our favorite songs has now evolved into a slick presentation with brightly colored graphics and multiple...
Hello Reader, Trust is a tenuous thing. Once broken it takes a long time to rebuild trust. Trust is also a very tenacious feeling. When given freely, it takes a lot to shake someone's trust. As human beings we are predisposed to trust other people. When faced with a new situation most people would like to start on a positive note - by giving the benefit of doubt. Unless you have had some trauma, or unpleasant experiences in the past, our default setting is to believe in each another. Which is...
Hello Reader, Some of my most interesting coaching sessions center around how to have difficult conversations. We are particularly sensitive to and go out of our way to avoid them. A feedback session where we felt attacked, an end-of-the-year review that gets our hackles up, or a discussion that devolves into an argument - we've all been there. Our reactions run the whole gamut - avoid, delay, justify and deny. And when we do find ourselves in the midst of an uncomfortable conversation, we...
