The EQrated vol. 23

Hello Reader,

This week Six Seconds released their State of the Heart (SOH) EQ Research Report. I recommend downloading the whole report. It has some great insights about EQ by industry, including Hospitality & Travel. The SOH study is based on a randomized global sample of professionals from 129 countries that has tracked the changing trends in emotional intelligence since 2011. Not surprisingly, the turmoil of the last year resulted in an overall decline in EQ. The skills related to Optimism, like Collaboration, Risk Taking and Imagination saw the most dramatic decreases. Collaboration was the hardest hit, at -13%.

Why is this important? Because when things get rough, we all have a tendency to retreat into our respective bubbles. The self-preservation instinct is programmed into our DNA. It doesn't help that the crisis at hand is a pandemic, which quite literally forced us to keep each other at arm's length. So how do we go against those instincts and think in terms of our team and our community? As we slowly find our way back to work, or redefine what work means for us, how do we work together and come up with new solutions?

This report by Microsoft offers some insights into the trends that will shape hybrid work. In particular, the trend related to collaboration (no. 5), shows how the pandemic affected our interactions with our immediate support teams vs. our larger networks. The way forward will look different for different organizations. And as with every major disruption, we will see setbacks and missteps as we find the right fit for everyone. What can help us along the way is a little more emotional intelligence, and a whole lot of optimism as we come together to face this new challenge. Are you ready to collaborate?

Here's your bi-weekly EQrated list of resources on COLLABORATION IN A HYBRID WORKPLACE:

Leading a Hybrid Workforce - “You’re on mute” became the mantra of suddenly virtual. In Hybrid, that will be replaced by, “is ___ coming in today?” On the surface, the question will be innocent, but in a few months, it will represent distrust and misalignment as new constituencies form and alignment declines. How many managers are ready to manage this added emotional complexity? Will a hybrid workplace be the best of both worlds – or the worst? Click to find out how to navigate this ever-evolving landscape. Source: Six Seconds

7 Strategies for Promoting Collaboration in a Crisis - Research shows that anxiety makes people more risk-averse in a crisis; as a result, they are less likely to seek out differing perspectives. They tend to fall back on actions and solutions that have worked in the past — what researchers call “threat rigidity.” Learn how to avoid falling in to the familiar trap of self-preservation at all costs. EQ Cafe - Collaboration - Save the date! I will be facilitating the next EQ Cafe on October 27 at 10 a.m. EST. In this session we will discuss why collaboration is so important, especially in times of crisis. While some of us are going back into the office, others are working from home and we are still adapting to this new normal. How can EQ support us move from an individualistic approach to a more collaborative one? Event alert!

Hello Reader, As December rolls around, we see many news articles and posts about the "Year in Review". Depending on your reading habits and media consumption, I'm guessing you have seen at least one such article. Spotify has even made a whole marketing campaign out of it. Since 2016, #SpotifyWrapped dissects our listening choices for the entire year. What started as a rudimentary list of our favorite songs has now evolved into a slick presentation with brightly colored graphics and multiple...

Hello Reader, Trust is a tenuous thing. Once broken it takes a long time to rebuild trust. Trust is also a very tenacious feeling. When given freely, it takes a lot to shake someone's trust. As human beings we are predisposed to trust other people. When faced with a new situation most people would like to start on a positive note - by giving the benefit of doubt. Unless you have had some trauma, or unpleasant experiences in the past, our default setting is to believe in each another. Which is...

Hello Reader, Some of my most interesting coaching sessions center around how to have difficult conversations. We are particularly sensitive to and go out of our way to avoid them. A feedback session where we felt attacked, an end-of-the-year review that gets our hackles up, or a discussion that devolves into an argument - we've all been there. Our reactions run the whole gamut - avoid, delay, justify and deny. And when we do find ourselves in the midst of an uncomfortable conversation, we...
