The EQrated vol. 22

Hello Reader,

A good hotel works like a well-oiled machine. It depends on large groups of people (and teams) working together - collaborating - to achieve the common goal of exceeding guest expectations. In fact, many businesses depend on disparate teams communicating and collaborating to achieve pre-defined goals. But how do you collaborate if some of your team members are working remotely, while others are in the office? How do you connect with people based in far-flung locales, in different time zones? Where do you find the motivation to have yet another conversation with a colleague after a day full of Zoom calls?

One of the emerging challenges of a hybrid workplace is the loss of spontaneous moments of connectivity and creativity. These so-called "water cooler" moments which were deemed trivial or even a waste of time in the pre-pandemic days are now being viewed as essential to exchanging information and building company culture. So much so that many companies are making a concerted effort to engineer these impromptu conversations through various collaboration platforms. Dux Raymond Sy refers to them as serendipitous collisions that, "create purposeful ways for people to interact, brainstorm, ideate and have informal discussions".

The past couple of years have seen a lot of changes in what work looks like in different parts of the world. There was a shift to remote work even before the pandemic. What the virus, and the ensuing shutdown, has done is accelerated the adoption of technology that encourages and supports remote work. But the pandemic has also laid bare the limitations of this technology. As we navigate the ever-changing workplace, we must be mindful of creating spaces and opportunities that allow for MORE collaboration. We must avoid the temptation to hide in our own individual bubbles just because it's convenient. The world is already too fractured for that.

Hello Reader, As December rolls around, we see many news articles and posts about the "Year in Review". Depending on your reading habits and media consumption, I'm guessing you have seen at least one such article. Spotify has even made a whole marketing campaign out of it. Since 2016, #SpotifyWrapped dissects our listening choices for the entire year. What started as a rudimentary list of our favorite songs has now evolved into a slick presentation with brightly colored graphics and multiple...

Hello Reader, Trust is a tenuous thing. Once broken it takes a long time to rebuild trust. Trust is also a very tenacious feeling. When given freely, it takes a lot to shake someone's trust. As human beings we are predisposed to trust other people. When faced with a new situation most people would like to start on a positive note - by giving the benefit of doubt. Unless you have had some trauma, or unpleasant experiences in the past, our default setting is to believe in each another. Which is...

Hello Reader, Some of my most interesting coaching sessions center around how to have difficult conversations. We are particularly sensitive to and go out of our way to avoid them. A feedback session where we felt attacked, an end-of-the-year review that gets our hackles up, or a discussion that devolves into an argument - we've all been there. Our reactions run the whole gamut - avoid, delay, justify and deny. And when we do find ourselves in the midst of an uncomfortable conversation, we...
