The EQrated vol. 21

Hello Reader,

How are you? Hope you were able to take a break from work. After a glorious summer of R&R, travel and visiting family, I am back!

September usually sees us busy with back-to-school and back-to-work activities. This year feels a little different though. If you have kids, you may be helping your kids settle back into a schedule. Whether they are going back to school in person or virtually, the first few weeks are hard. And so is dealing with the uncertainty of the evolving work place. Many companies announced plans to get their employees back into the office, only to roll back those plans due to the realities of the Delta variant.

Even if you live in a geographical location that is not severely affected by the new variant(s), the pandemic has irrevocably changed the way we work over the past 18 months. Many companies have viewed the pandemic as an opportunity to renew focus on employee well-being and have expanded their health & wellness programs. Some companies have provided access to free counseling and life coach sessions. Others have introduced a whole host of benefits including subsidies for childcare, sabbaticals to pursue personal interests, meeting-free days and company-wide office closures to unwind and destress. Nike is just one of these examples.

The pandemic has also forced us to reckon with new vocabulary and concepts like "Hybrid" workplace, "Virtual First Company", "Location Flexible", "Cloud HQ", "Discretionary Time Off (DTO)" and many more. As we grapple with the realities of this work place, it might be worthwhile to invest in re-onboarding our teams. Traditionally the practice of onboarding was applicable to new employees who needed information and guidance on company practices and culture. But now, with all the upheaval caused by remote vs. in-person vs. hybrid work and the disconnect of the past 18 months, even long-term employees can benefit from a re-onboarding experience.

What are some of the new practices adopted by your company to enhance employee wellness? Are you creating a re-onboarding program for returning & existing employees? Let us know @YourTurnSolutions on LinkedIn & Facebook.

Hello Reader, As December rolls around, we see many news articles and posts about the "Year in Review". Depending on your reading habits and media consumption, I'm guessing you have seen at least one such article. Spotify has even made a whole marketing campaign out of it. Since 2016, #SpotifyWrapped dissects our listening choices for the entire year. What started as a rudimentary list of our favorite songs has now evolved into a slick presentation with brightly colored graphics and multiple...

Hello Reader, Trust is a tenuous thing. Once broken it takes a long time to rebuild trust. Trust is also a very tenacious feeling. When given freely, it takes a lot to shake someone's trust. As human beings we are predisposed to trust other people. When faced with a new situation most people would like to start on a positive note - by giving the benefit of doubt. Unless you have had some trauma, or unpleasant experiences in the past, our default setting is to believe in each another. Which is...

Hello Reader, Some of my most interesting coaching sessions center around how to have difficult conversations. We are particularly sensitive to and go out of our way to avoid them. A feedback session where we felt attacked, an end-of-the-year review that gets our hackles up, or a discussion that devolves into an argument - we've all been there. Our reactions run the whole gamut - avoid, delay, justify and deny. And when we do find ourselves in the midst of an uncomfortable conversation, we...
