Hello Reader,
As more and more businesses open up, there is a big flow of human resources in the market place. Employees who were furloughed or lost their jobs early on in the pandemic are returning to the work force. Many businesses, including hotels and restaurants are hiring (or attempting to hire) new employees to pre-pandemic levels. Many employees are quitting their existing jobs in search for something better. In a phenomenon that has been called the "Great Resignation of 2021", as many as 26 to 40% of employees are expected to change their jobs this year. In this dynamic situation, there is even more emphasis on hiring and onboarding, new and returning employees.
Onboarding is an important part of the hiring process. Once all the interviews are done and you have settled on your candidate of choice, they have the choice of joining the organization and becoming a member of your team. And they really are two separate steps. The first step involves completing all the paperwork and formalities and can be completed in 3 - 5 days. The second step is where the real work begins and is a much more long-term process.
Assimilating a new employee into the company culture and ensuring that they are a valuable, contributing member of their team is a difficult job under any circumstance. Add to that the complexities of Work from Home (WFH), Work from Anywhere (WFA), Hybrid model and one can only imagine all the logistics required. No wonder more and more companies are relying on specialists and third-party solution providers to map the employee journey and outsource the onboarding experience. This week's articles feature two such providers (Sapling and Tydy). As usual, a reminder that while I agree with their views, this is not an endorsement and I am not compensated by them in any way.
Replacing employees is expensive and time consuming. According to Gallup, "the cost of replacing an individual employee can range from one-half to two times the employee's annual salary". This is why it is more important than ever to onboard and engage employees with the right tools, including coaching and mentoring. After all, engaged employees are productive employees!

Hello Reader, As December rolls around, we see many news articles and posts about the "Year in Review". Depending on your reading habits and media consumption, I'm guessing you have seen at least one such article. Spotify has even made a whole marketing campaign out of it. Since 2016, #SpotifyWrapped dissects our listening choices for the entire year. What started as a rudimentary list of our favorite songs has now evolved into a slick presentation with brightly colored graphics and multiple...
Hello Reader, Trust is a tenuous thing. Once broken it takes a long time to rebuild trust. Trust is also a very tenacious feeling. When given freely, it takes a lot to shake someone's trust. As human beings we are predisposed to trust other people. When faced with a new situation most people would like to start on a positive note - by giving the benefit of doubt. Unless you have had some trauma, or unpleasant experiences in the past, our default setting is to believe in each another. Which is...
Hello Reader, Some of my most interesting coaching sessions center around how to have difficult conversations. We are particularly sensitive to and go out of our way to avoid them. A feedback session where we felt attacked, an end-of-the-year review that gets our hackles up, or a discussion that devolves into an argument - we've all been there. Our reactions run the whole gamut - avoid, delay, justify and deny. And when we do find ourselves in the midst of an uncomfortable conversation, we...
