I've been thinking about skills versus attitude this week. Is there a difference? And if there is, which one is more important? Aptitude or attitude? Some might argue that we are born with one (attitude) while we acquire the other (skills) or vice versa. Somehow it boils down to the age-old IQ vs EQ debate. Why does it matter? Aren't both equally important?
As some parts of the world start to open up, and people start traveling again, many hotels are gearing up to welcome guests once more. And for the HR departments of these hotels, that means hiring, training & onboarding a whole new set of people...and hopefully welcoming back some familiar faces. But when interviewing candidates, what do they look for? Is it better to have advanced skills in a particular field or is it preferable to have a can-do attitude that will enable you to learn the skills on the job? Are optimism & enthusiasm overrated?
What I know is that attitude usually shines through. As a guest, I know when I see someone who is genuinely happy to be doing what they are doing. As a guest, I am also willing to overlook many mistakes when faced with a new employee who is sincere in his/her efforts. Hospitality is the art of making someone feel welcome. It is both an abstract concept and a science that requires a special set of skills and a whole lot of attitude - a guest-first attitude that is.
