Hello Reader,
I remember when I was a teenager, my mum (shhh! don’t tell her!) would storm into my bedroom at 9 am on Sunday morning. She would open the curtains, vacuum cleaner in hand, and she would invite me (which is putting it politely) to rise up since if “You snooze, you lose"!
Now my mum had no intention of creating this belief, but the impact was that my night-owl-self grew up believing that sleep was totally overrated!
How wrong was I?!
On the occasion of World Sleep Day (observed on March 19) we dedicate this EQrated volume to SLEEP, its importance on our emotional well-being and on our leadership effectiveness and how to get more of it.
I eventually caught up on how important sleep is. Actually we all know that sleep is important. But I don't think we really appreciate HOW important. Recently, I did some more research on SLEEP. I was amazed at how many different ways sleep, or that lack of it, affects our bodies and our emotions. There is growing evidence that during deep sleep our brain appears to remove toxins that increase the risk for Alzheimer's disease. And it is a well-known fact that we make poor decisions and are unable to do even simple tasks when we are sleep deprived.
To dig more into this topic, I have invited Joni Peddie, CEO of Resilient People, to join me in a conversation around sleep, emotions, guest experience, shift work… and more. The interview will be shared on my YouTube channel as well as on LinkedIn on Friday.
In the meantime, here's your bi-weekly EQrated list of resources on SLEEP:

Hello Reader, As December rolls around, we see many news articles and posts about the "Year in Review". Depending on your reading habits and media consumption, I'm guessing you have seen at least one such article. Spotify has even made a whole marketing campaign out of it. Since 2016, #SpotifyWrapped dissects our listening choices for the entire year. What started as a rudimentary list of our favorite songs has now evolved into a slick presentation with brightly colored graphics and multiple...
Hello Reader, Trust is a tenuous thing. Once broken it takes a long time to rebuild trust. Trust is also a very tenacious feeling. When given freely, it takes a lot to shake someone's trust. As human beings we are predisposed to trust other people. When faced with a new situation most people would like to start on a positive note - by giving the benefit of doubt. Unless you have had some trauma, or unpleasant experiences in the past, our default setting is to believe in each another. Which is...
Hello Reader, Some of my most interesting coaching sessions center around how to have difficult conversations. We are particularly sensitive to and go out of our way to avoid them. A feedback session where we felt attacked, an end-of-the-year review that gets our hackles up, or a discussion that devolves into an argument - we've all been there. Our reactions run the whole gamut - avoid, delay, justify and deny. And when we do find ourselves in the midst of an uncomfortable conversation, we...
